Chapter 14

Mr. Gardiner knocked on the front door in front of an annoyed wife and a resentful niece. He prayed the butler would take pity on his plight. Women are strange creatures at the best of times. But a lot worse when they don’t get their own way.

A few moments passed as they waited for the door to open. Elizabeth began to have doubts. She thought about running away. But why? She had done nothing wrong.

This was his problem, not hers. As her uncle knocked a second time, her courage had returned. When the butler finally opened the door, she was ready to confront Mr. Darcy.

Elizabeth’s Uncle donned his hat. “Good morning. I am Mr. Edward Gardiner. I have arranged to see Mr. Darcy for a short interview.” The butler’s face remained impassive. “This is my wife, Mrs. Gardiner, and my niece Miss Elizabeth Bennet.”

Jenkins stared at Mr. Gardiner. “I am not aware of any visit today.”

“My brother-in-law Mr. Bennet arranged it.” Edward pulled a letter from his pocket. “As you can see.” He unraveled the letter in front of him. “It states that Mr. Darcy has agreed to see me today.”

“But not your wife and niece,” the Butler replied in a frosty tone. “Mr. Darcy is a very busy gentleman. He will not have the time to attend to three visitors.”

“I apologize for my minor discretion,” Mr. Gardiner gave a little bow. “But I assure you the ladies will not be long in his company.” Mr. Gardiner glanced at Elizabeth and his wife. They looked just as unimpressed by his explanation as the butler. “They have a lot of shopping to do in London.”

Jenkins snatched the letter from his hand. “This is most inconvenient. Mr. Darcy is about to leave for a fencing lesson.”

“We do not mean to intrude on his time.” Mrs. Gardiner put on a sweet smile. “It is only a brief visit.”

The butler gave a small sniff of his nose. “I will speak directly to Mr. Darcy. But I cannot guarantee a meeting today.” Jenkins shut the door. He left them nervously waiting for the next five minutes.

Maybe Fitzwilliam had no intention of meeting them, Elizabeth mused. Had he escaped through the back door to his beloved White’s club?

“Horrid man. Why did we come here?” Elizabeth raised her hands in despair. “It might look as if I’m running after him. What a fool I feel.”

“Believe me Lizzy, I feel just as foolish as you.” Mrs. Gardiner stared at her husband. “I only hope that he may agree to a meeting under the circumstances.”

A few more moments passed.

“We must go.” Elizabeth turned away. “Its all been a big mistake.”

“Wait.” Mr. Gardiner demanded as Elizabeth stepped towards the carriage. “The butler will inform us of another time to call.”

“This is so humiliating,” Elizabeth said. “I wish I had never set eyes on Mr. Darcy.”

Jenkins swung open the door. “Mr. Darcy said he will see you.” Elizabeth turned around in shock. “But only for a short time. He is a very busy man.
